Altaglass was manufactured in Medicine Hat Alberta from 1950 to 1988. They were creations of whimsical and decorative art glass pieces, such as animal figures, vases, bowls, candy dishes, ashtrays and paperweights. Altaglass was operated by John Furch, a Czechoslovakian immigrant. An experienced glass blower, Furch built his own furnaces, tools and kilns for the Altaglass factory and was assisted by his daughter and her husband.
Identifying pieces that are missing the distinctive Altaglass decals is difficult. The earliest items produced by Altaglass have a round black and gold sticker, inscribed with “Hand Made Altaglass Medicine Hat.” A diamond shaped black and gold decal followed; many of these stickers today are now silver. In 1967 that Altaglass began affixing a decal in the shape of a maple leaf. These stickers were used for several years after 1967. Also note on the bottom of some pieces mounted on glass pad, there will be a pattern of raised dots. The pattern has the initials “AG” inside a diamond shape.
